Today is the National Day of Prayer. It's a day when Christians of all stripes come together to pray in unison. Today I will be praying for a young family at our church. I don't know them well, but they are dealing with the kind of loss that nobody should have to face. The couple is in their early to mid-twenties with two kids. Sunday night, their six-month old baby boy died of apparent SIDS. I cannot imagine being in their position, nor do I want to. I don't know how you wake up the next day and take care of your three year old. I don't know how you remember that God is in control and loves you. I don't know how you live after that.
I will also be praying for the family of a friend of a friend. He killed himself yesterday. I will pray for his wife as she tries to cope with the situation. She is currently pregnant with twins, and must now figure out how to carry on with her life.
Today I will pray for the families in Tennessee who are dealing with the worst flooding they have seen in decades. Living near St. Louis, I have seen what damage flood waters can do. Those affected will have to rebuild their entire lives.
In addition, I will pray today that God makes me a better person who is more able to appreciate the blessings I have been given. The biggest problem I woke up to this morning was a dog that wanted to dig through my trash can. I didn't lose a precious child and the promise of what he could become. My husband didn't take his own life and leave me to provide for two unborn babies. My home is not filled with water, mud and destruction. It's days like this that I again remember my favorite Bible verse:
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will
for you in Christ Jesus. -I Thess 5:18
