The renovations on our house seem like they have dragged on and on and on and ... ok you get the point. We finally finished the last of it this week and we go next week to sign the final mortgage package.
Our last two weeks have been spent repairing the nast oozing out of our walls. Our house is 121 years old. At the time it was built, houses were built out of brick, and the interior walls were plaster. Since the house wasn't properly maintained before we bought it, water managed to penetrated into the brick and get the lower layers of plaster wet. It was so horrible. All of a sudden we noticed that the paint in our living and dining rooms looked like they were bubbling off. When we went over to touch them, powdered plaster fell off the wall.
Being the brave do-it-yourselfers (read: morons) that we are, Bob and I decided we could handle it. We pushed all of the furniture into the middle of the rooms and started pulling the bad spots off the wall not thinking that it was damaged all the way down to the brick. It was. It was so bad in there, we set up dehumidifiers near the walls for a week to dry things out. I was thisclose to losing my mind tripping over all my furniture that whole time!
Finally things were dry enough to patch up with plaster. Once that set up we had to try and match the texture that was already on the wall. I spent several hours mudding and texturing ... what a nightmare! Finally we were able to repaint the sections we fixed, and now our walls aren't freaky anymore. Our house looks like big people live in it! Yea!
